Care Home Highlights Non‑Verbal Connection in Dementia Support

From Hampton Grove Care Home….
Hampton Grove Care Home in Peterborough is proving that while dementia may take away words, it can never diminish the person within. The home’s activity coordinator, Becky, recently shared a moving tribute to resident Karen and her husband, Pete, highlighting the profound “silent” communication that defines their daily bond.
Power of Non‑Verbal Connection
Karen, who is now non-verbal, continues to connect with staff and her husband through facial expressions, warmth, and a lingering “spark” of humorous personality. The story, which was recently shared on social media, has resonated deeply with the local community, with family members and friends describing the couple as an inspiration.
Pete, who visits Karen daily, has integrated with the home over the past number of years, and who himself is living with a serious health condition, has been praised by other resident’s families for his tireless support to other residents, with local Diane Lewis, who shared, “Without his help, we would be at a loss.” Pete is often seen around the home, helping here and there and also pottering about in the home’s garden, ready to connect with everyone who visits or resides at the home, along with bringing heartfelt warmth to the home’s staff.
Understand more about dementia
Gillian Lewis commented on the home’s social media page, “That’s an amazing thing to do, so that helps other people understand more about dementia it’s not an easy job what the staff do and Peter is an amazing person he helps everyone in the home if he is able, your kindness and patience are a virtue are what you are all about, good work Hampton Grove”
Pete shared, “Dementia changes how someone speaks, but it doesn’t change who they are. Connection, humour, and love are felt far beyond words. Sometimes a smile or a touch says more than a conversation ever could.”
General Manager Stefan said, “Pete is a welcome face in the home, bringing his sunny disposition to all he connects with, and through his sharing of communication, this is in line with one of our Free community events we will be holding.”
To support local families navigating similar journeys, Hampton Grove invited the Peterborough community to a special event: “Talking Positively to Someone Living with Dementia.” This event took place, and this session offered practical advice, emotional support, and insights into maintaining meaningful connections when verbal communication becomes difficult.
