There is always something new to discover in Peterborough.

On a recent visit to the city, I called into Higgsy’s in Cowgate and enjoyed what can only be described as a superb burger. I’ll tell you more about that little gem another time. With lunch finished, I wandered down towards the city centre, enjoying the familiar bustle of Cathedral Square.

Although I have visited Peterborough centre many times, I realised there was one landmark I had never actually stepped inside: St John’s Church.

Standing proudly in the heart of Cathedral Square, St John’s is one of those buildings most of us walk past without giving a second thought. Its historic tower has watched over the city for centuries, yet for many people it remains something of a mystery.

As I pushed open the door, I was pleasantly surprised by what greeted me. Rather than the quiet, empty church I expected, I found a welcoming café area with people chatting over refreshments. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, more of a community hub than a museum piece.

The church itself dates back to the early 15th century and has been serving the people of Peterborough since 1407. Historically, while Peterborough Cathedral was the church of the monks, St John’s became the church of the townspeople, earning its place as the city’s parish church.

There is so much to see

soLooking around, there is plenty to admire. Beautiful stained‑glass windows filter coloured light into the building, while intricate carvings and memorials provide a glimpse into centuries of local history. Yet despite its heritage, St John’s feels very much alive and relevant today. What struck me most was the sense of welcome. In a busy city centre where everyone seems to be rushing somewhere, St John’s offers a space to pause, reflect and connect with others.

A church which is more than just a church

And from the photos I took, one thing became even clearer: St John’s is deeply committed to supporting thorcse who need it most. Their outreach quietly touches many corners of the community, from helping homeless residents to offering companionship for elderly visitors and providing safe, supportive spaces for children. It’s the kind of everyday compassion that often goes unseen, yet makes a real difference in people’s lives.

Sometimes the best discoveries are hiding in plain sight. On this occasion, one of Peterborough’s most familiar landmarks turned out to be one of its most interesting.

And that is the wonderful thing about exploring our local area: there is always something new waiting just beyond a door you’ve never opened before.
