The Cock Inn Friendship Group Brings Werrington Together

The Cock Inn in Werrington has launched the Werrington Friendship Group, a warm community initiative bringing people together for conversation, companionship and the chance to make new friends.

At the invitation of a friend, I recently went along to The Cock Inn in Werrington, where the pub has launched a welcome new initiative aimed at bringing people in the local community together.

Around twenty people gathered for the Werrington Friendship Group and were welcomed with tea, coffee and biscuits before being encouraged to introduce themselves and simply strike up conversations with those around them.

And that simplicity is perhaps what made the afternoon so worthwhile.

The Cock Inn has created the Werrington Friendship Group to bring people together, including those who may have lost someone special in their lives, those experiencing loneliness or looking for a reason to leave the house, people wanting to make new friends, and those who have recently moved into the area and would simply like to meet others in their community.

There were no great formalities. Sitting together around a long table in a room towards the back of the pub, people talked, listened, and began getting to know one another.

From what I saw, The Cock Inn’s initiative achieved many of the things it set out to do, and hopefully some of those first conversations will develop into new friendships and encourage people to return for future Wednesday gatherings at 3.00pm.

It is a small initiative, but one with a very important purpose.

Loneliness and isolation can touch many people’s lives, particularly following the loss of someone close, and sometimes all that is needed is a welcoming place and a reason to walk through the door.

The Cock Inn deserves credit for providing both.

The pub itself is also a fascinating old building which undoubtedly has a history worth exploring. When we have more time, we hope to return, delve a little deeper into its past and perhaps investigate the restaurant menu as well.

But on this visit, the important story was a much simpler one.

The Cock Inn opened its doors and gave local people an opportunity to open conversations with each other. Sometimes that is where friendship begins.
