Why do so many postmen wear shorts all year round? From tradition and practicality to comfort on long daily rounds, discover the reasons behind one of Britain's most familiar and enduring postal mysteries.

The Mystery of the Shorts-Wearing Postman

During my regular biker meet visit to Eye this morning, I found myself having one of those unexpected conversations that can brighten the day and leave you smiling long afterwards.

The weather was certainly mixed. The sun was shining brightly and the sky was clear, but there was a distinctly cold wind sweeping through the streets. Having spent many years living in Cyprus before returning to the UK two years ago, I still find myself adjusting to what many people here consider “normal” weather.

Come rain, wind or shine, many posties wear shorts all year round.

As I walked along the High Street, I noticed a postman collecting letters from one of the local post boxes. What caught my attention wasn’t the mailbag or the familiar red uniform. It was the fact that he was wearing shorts.

With the chilly wind making its presence felt, I couldn’t resist asking him a question.

“Excuse me,” I said. “Can I ask you something? I lived in Cyprus for many years, and at this time of year people would be wrapped up in heavy clothing.

Since returning to the UK, I often see postmen wearing shorts, even when it’s quite cold. Is it part of the uniform?”

He laughed immediately.

“Do you know,” he replied, “people ask about that all the time. It’s almost become a joke.”

He went on to explain that, locally at least, around 90 per cent of postmen choose to wear shorts for much of the year.

“Today I’m wearing shorts and I don’t mind the weather at all,” he said. “We do a lot of walking and our legs keep themselves warm.”

It was a simple explanation, but one that perfectly reflected a uniquely British attitude. While many of us are reaching for coats, scarves and extra layers, Britain’s postmen and women are often striding around in shorts as if it were the middle of summer.

Perhaps it’s practical. Perhaps it’s tradition. Or perhaps it is simply a badge of honour among those who spend their working day outdoors, whatever the weather.

For someone returning from the Mediterranean Miles of walking each day mean many posties say their legs never feel cold.sunshine of Cyprus, it still raises a smile every time I see it. Yet after speaking with this cheerful postman, I began to understand. When your job involves walking miles every day, you’re generating your own central heating system.

The encounter also reminded me how often the best stories come from everyday moments. A simple question, a shared laugh, and a glimpse into a small piece of British culture that many of us see but rarely think about.

So next time you spot a postman in shorts on a chilly morning, remember: while you may be feeling the cold, they’re probably wondering what all the fuss is about.
