Copeland Centre with Ena Mckinsley leading a song
A Warm Monday Morning of Music and Community in Bretton
My friend, Reform Councillor and entertainer John Bolton, knowing my interest in reviewing community centres and local clubs, recently invited me to join him at The Copeland Centre in Bretton, where he was leading one of his popular entertainment sessions.
Like many of Peterborough’s modern community hubs, the Copeland Centre has a welcoming atmosphere, and I was kindly invited by Ena Mckinsley to introduce myself to the 30 or so people gathered there. I shared a little of my background — how I lived in Northern Cyprus for 17 years, where my late partner and I wrote for local newspapers before creating the CyprusScene website, which continues to publish news and reviews from both Cyprus and around the world.
Since returning to the UK and settling back in Peterborough, I felt inspired to build something similar for my local community. That idea became Peterborough Wide Horizons, a platform dedicated to local news, reviews, and especially the stories that emerge from our community centres — places where people come together, make friends, and support one another.
During the session, Jonathan Buckle, one of the members, gave an engaging talk that set a lovely tone for the morning. Then John Bolton took to the floor, guitar in hand, and soon had everyone smiling, singing along, and calling out requests. His energy and warmth filled the room.
It was a wonderful gathering — friendly faces, shared stories, and a genuine sense of community spirit. I left feeling uplifted and very much looking forward to returning to the Copeland Centre, where this warm and lively group thrives every Monday from 10 am to 12 midday, where they will be serving unlimited hot drinks & cakes for just £2.
