Customer Reltionship Manager Louise Ramage & Rachel Elding Cybercrime & Fraud Prevention Officer at Hampton Grove Care Home
Care Home Hosts Successful Scam Awareness Event for Local Community
We are all at risk of being targeted by scammers every day, whether through our landlines, mobile phones, computers or tablets. That’s why we’re delighted to share this important news and advice from Barchester’s Hampton Grove Care Home, which recently hosted a highly informative Scam Awareness event for the local community.
“Hampton Grove Care Home in Peterborough were delighted to welcome Rachel Elding from Cambridgeshire Constabulary, who delivered an eye‑opening and essential talk about staying safe from scammers.
How to spot scams
Rachel shared practical advice on spotting scams across landlines, mobile phones, apps and emails. She taught visitors, residents and staff the ABCD and Take 5 methods — simple techniques that encourage people to stay calm, avoid pressure, and take a moment to check things out before responding. She reminded everyone that if you receive an unexpected call or message, pause, breathe, and verify it. You can ask a trusted friend, call your bank using a known safe number, or visit your local branch for reassurance.
Some of the statistics Rachel presented were truly shocking. Only 17% of people actually report scams. Around 45% of all reported crime is cybercrime, yet less than 2% of scammers are ever caught. Even more alarming, people in Cambridgeshire lose an estimated £2 million every month to these criminals.
Tools and seeking help
Rachel also provided practical tools to help people protect themselves, including doorstep stickers to deter cold callers. She highlighted key reporting routes:
- 159 – direct line to your bank
- 7726 – forward suspicious texts
- report@phishing.gov.uk – send scam emails
Residents, staff and visitors shared their own frustrating experiences with scam calls and messages. The good news? Everyone already knew the golden rule — just hang up the phone.
Rachel emphasised the importance of breaking the silence around scams. There is no need to feel embarrassed if you are targeted or tricked; it can happen to anyone. Talking openly with friends and family helps keep everyone safer and more aware.
Customer Relationship Manager Louise Ramage offered a heartfelt thank‑you to Rachel for visiting Hampton Grove Care Home and sharing such vital advice to help protect residents, loved ones and the wider community.”
