Mara: kyreniacommentator has been covering a live local planning dispute — a proposed set of parking restrictions near the ice rink in Gurnard Leys, and the councillor pushing back against them. Let’s start with what that argument actually is.

Cllr Bolton Takes on the Yellow Lines

Pip: The core tension here is a familiar one in local government: a restriction designed to solve a narrow, time-limited problem that would be in force permanently, affecting everyone, all year round.

Mara: Cllr John Bolton sets that up directly. The post quotes him saying, “The proposal has primarily been put forward to prevent parking on match days at the ice rink. However, these parking issues generally occur for around 2½ hours on weekends during the six-month ice hockey season.”

Pip: So the remedy outlasts the problem by about six months, and applies around the clock. Double yellow lines do not take weekends off.

Mara: That is Bolton’s central objection — double yellows mean no parking at any time, permanently removing spaces from a residential street. He argues the real issue is that parking capacity has simply not kept pace with the ice rink’s growing popularity.

Pip: Which is a reasonable framing. The rink is doing well, people want to go, and the answer being floated is to make parking harder rather than more available.

Mara: He also raises a displacement argument, drawing on conversations with residents of Linkside — the road on the opposite side of the roundabout. Their concern was that restrictions in Gurnard Leys would push vehicles into surrounding streets rather than reduce the overall number of cars arriving on match days.

Pip: Moving the queue is not the same as shortening it.

Is this proposal the right solution to a problem?

Mara: Exactly, and Bolton makes two further points worth noting. Gurnard Leys is a one-way road that is currently unsigned, and residents raised concerns about lorries parking there. His view is that a weight restriction would address that more precisely than a blanket parking ban. He also notes that many properties on the road already have off-road parking for several vehicles, which in his view makes the restrictions unnecessary.

Pip: His stated position is that he will keep pressing for additional parking provision near the ice rink — solutions that support residents and visitors rather than, as he puts it, relocating the problem from one street to another.

Pip: A councillor on record, a position stated clearly, and a venue that keeps growing — this one is not resolved yet.

Pip: Worth watching what the ice rink’s next season brings with it.
