A Surprise Macedonian Cultural Encounter in Peterborough
While spending time in Peterborough city centre on Saturday, I was delighted to come across a group of Macedonian folk dancers performing outside St John’s Church in Cathedral Square. Their colourful traditional costumes and lively dances immediately brought back memories of similar cultural performances I have often enjoyed in Northern Cyprus.
I was able to capture, a short video clip of the dancers in action, which you can view below.
Curious to learn more, I later went into St John’s Church for a coffee and bun and was pleasantly surprised to discover that the dancers had set up an information stall inside. This gave me the opportunity to speak with members of the group and learn more about their traditions, heritage and community activities, as well as their participation in the Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery’s “Heritage Stories” event.
During our conversation, these very friendly and welcoming people kindly gave me a couple of informative leaflets, which provide a fascinating insight into Macedonian culture, traditions and community life. You can read them by clicking the following links:
The experience was a timely reminder that, while countries and cultures may differ, music, dance and community spirit have the power to bring people together and create lasting connections.

As I was leaving St John’s Church, I spotted a Nepalese group who had just completed their own public demonstration as part of the same Heritage Stories event. It was yet another example of the rich cultural diversity that exists within our city and a reminder that Peterborough has so much to offer those willing to explore it.
With my unexpected cultural discovery complete, I continued on my way to Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery to see what other stories awaited me. My next task was to prepare a fresh review of the museum and its exhibits. To read our previous review, click here.
