A Peterborough care home is shining a spotlight on a dedicated local husband to publicly thank him for his outstanding, tireless volunteer work as their official ‘Family Ambassador’.

Pete Nightingale has been a beloved, familiar face at Hampton Grove Care Home, operated by Barchester Healthcare, since his wife, Karen, was admitted for specialist permanent dementia care. Since then, Pete has dedicated his days to enhancing life inside the home, and staff felt it was high time his extraordinary contribution received the official recognition it deserves.

As the home’s Family Ambassador, Pete serves as a warm, reassuring figure for new families, residents, and visiting professionals. He uses his own personal history with the home to give families an honest, comforting account of the care journey, helping them navigate the emotional transition of moving a loved one into specialist care.

Pete’s compassion and gentle nature extend into every corner of Hampton Grove. He spends his days actively participating in resident activities and working hand-in-hand with Activities Coordinator, Becky Merrington, to support the home in any way he can. He has also taken complete ownership of the home’s grounds, maintaining the garden on a daily basis and even returning in the evenings to water the plant

Becky Merrington, Activities Coordinator, added “Pete’s energy and willingness to help make a massive difference to our residents every single day. We have built such a wonderful relationship with him, whether he is helping me run our daily activities or quietly tending to the garden. We wanted to make sure he knows just how valued and loved he is by all the staff and residents.”

Hampton Grove Care Home is run by Barchester Healthcare and provides high-quality residential, nursing, and specialist dementia care for local residents.
