Recently, I headed to Sharon’s Snack Shack in Eye to meet up with a group of biker friends who have made this popular café one of their favourite gathering places. With the smell of freshly cooked food in the air and friendly conversations flowing, it’s easy to see why Sharon’s Snack Shack has become a well-known destination for motorcycle enthusiasts and many others from across the region.

A warm welcome at Sharon’s Snack Shack

Situated on Eye High Street, Sharon’s Snack Shack enjoys a loyal following of local residents, passing motorists, cyclists and bikers alike. Parking is available at the rear of the property and can be reached via the side road near the Co-op.

From there, turn left and then left again into the spacious car park. Entering the welcoming café, visitors can enjoy a varied menu of freshly prepared food, hot drinks and homemade favourites, all served in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

During my visit, there was a steady flow of customers coming and going, while others relaxed over tea and coffee, catching up with friends and enjoying the welcoming surroundings. It quickly became clear that Sharon’s is far more than simply a place to eat. It has become a valued meeting place for the local community and visitors alike.

With my biker friends heading off, it seemed the perfect opportunity to spend a little time appreciating the village of Eye itself. Like many of our local communities, Eye has a story that stretches back hundreds of years and remains very much alive today.

A Village with a Story to Tell

The name “Eye” comes from an old Anglo-Saxon word meaning “island”, which is fitting as the village once stood on higher ground surrounded by marshland before the nearby fens were drained. Today, many of the older buildings, quiet lanes and open spaces help preserve the village’s distinctive character.

Although Eye has grown over the years, it has retained the warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes it such an attractive place to live and visit.

Walking along Eye High Street, I noticed how the traffic moves at a gentler pace thanks to the various traffic-calming measures in place. While some motorists may find themselves slowing down more than they would like, it does give everyone a better opportunity to appreciate the variety of historic buildings and local features that make the village unique. Even on a brief visit, you can still sense those connections with the past.

I also took the opportunity to walk through the grounds of St Matthew’s Church, which stands proudly at the heart of the community. Although the church itself was closed, I was able to admire the moving Remembrance display within the churchyard. Continuing along the pathway towards Back Street, I came across a small building celebrating another piece of local history, the original Eye Fire Station, a reminder of the village’s long tradition of community service and civic pride.

Leaving Something for Next Time

Perhaps that is why Sharon’s Snack Shack fits so naturally into village life. It is far more than somewhere to grab a bite to eat. It is a place where people meet, stories are shared, friendships are formed and communities come together. Whether arriving on two wheels, four wheels or on foot, visitors soon discover that Eye offers not only a fascinating glimpse into the past but also a strong sense of community in the present.

For me, that is often the real story behind places like Eye. Beyond the history, the landmarks and the buildings, it is the people who make a community what it is. On this visit, whether chatting with local residents, admiring reminders of the village’s past, enjoying the hospitality at Sharon’s Snack Shack or catching up with fellow bikers over a mug of tea, there was a genuine sense of belonging that left a lasting impression.
