St John’s Flower Festival: A Warm Summer Day in Werrington
A hot summer day is the perfect time to wander through Werrington, a village whose character still shines through its mix of old buildings, quiet corners, and familiar community landmarks. Once a distinct rural settlement long before it became part of Peterborough, Werrington still carries the feel of its older roots, from the traditional village green to the historic cottages and farmhouses that date back to the 17th and 18th centuries.
Even in the heat, the stonework seemed to glow, and each turn offered something small but interesting: a carved lintel, an old doorway, or a glimpse of how the village has grown while still holding onto its identity.

My visit also took me to St John’s Parish Church, a building with deep roots in the community. Parts of the church date back to the 12th century, with later medieval and Victorian additions shaping the tower, porch, and interior. Generations have worshipped, celebrated, and gathered here, and that sense of continuity was especially clear during the annual flower festival. Stepping inside from the heat, the cool air and the scent of fresh arrangements created an immediate sense of calm, and the displays, carefully created by volunteers, filled the church with colour and community spirit.
After walking through the church, I continued out through the ancient graveyards, where time seems to slow. Weathered headstones, shaded corners, and the quiet of the grounds offered a moment of reflection before the path opened out onto the village green. Despite the heat, a few locals were gathered there, chatting around a couple of activity and refreshment tables set up for the day. It added a gentle, social note to the visit — a reminder that Werrington’s sense of community is very much alive outdoors as well as inside its historic buildings.
I have put together a small slideshow video to capture the feel of the day, the sunshine, the flowers, the history, and the simple warmth of village life in summer and I hope you enjoy it.
