Cllr John Bolton Questions Gurnard Leys Parking Restrictions

From Bretton Reform Councillor, John D Bolton

I wanted to update residents on my position regarding the proposed parking restrictions in Gurnard Leys.  Peterborough PE3 8

I have opposed the introduction of yellow lines in Gurnard Leys because I do not believe they provide the right solution to the issue.

The proposal has primarily been put forward to prevent parking on match days at the ice rink. However, these parking issues generally occur for around 2½ hours on weekends during the six-month ice hockey season. The proposed restrictions, including double yellow lines on one side of the road, would be in force all year round. Double yellow lines mean no parking at any time, permanently removing parking spaces from the area.

I also spoke with residents of Linkside, the road on the opposite side of the roundabout, which is of a similar width and is already used by visitors parking on match days. Their view was that introducing restrictions in Gurnard Leys would simply push more vehicles into surrounding streets rather than solving the underlying problem.

In my view, the answer is to provide additional parking capacity, not remove existing parking spaces. The popularity of the ice rink and the local team has grown significantly, and the current parking provision has simply not kept pace with that growth.

It’s also worth noting that Gurnard Leys is a one-way road, although it is currently unsigned. One concern raised by residents was the presence of parked lorries. I believe this could be addressed more appropriately by introducing a weight restriction rather than blanket parking restrictions.

Many of the properties in Gurnard Leys have generous driveways with off-road parking for several vehicles, which is another reason why I feel these restrictions are unnecessary.

Residents of Linkside have also told me they do not want parking restrictions introduced on their road and are generally happy for visitors to park there on match days. If the proposed restrictions in Gurnard Leys go ahead, I believe it will simply increase the number of vehicles parking on neighbouring residential roads.

I will continue to press for a longer-term solution by pursuing additional parking provision for the ice rink. As the venue continues to grow in popularity, we need solutions that support both local residents and visitors, rather than simply relocating the problem from one street to another.
